Dinner seeks to serve up welcome

BROKEN HIll’s first ever New to Town Dinner is on the menu for Saturday, February 8, with the aim of offering a free night of fun and food to welcome new people to the region.

The dinner is run by the Silver City Christian Revival Crusade, a Pentecostal church community in Broken Hill, but the event is open for everyone.

Senior Pastor Jessie Heidenreich said the dinner is open to everyone in the community.

“The event is so people new in town can come and meet one another and find out information about the goings on of Broken Hill,” Ms Heidenreich said.

“What we really want to do as a church is better the community regardless of what people’s beliefs are.

“We want to be a positive presence in the community, and this is part of that.”

Ms Heidenreich said it’s the first dinner of its kind, however she is hoping that the church can hold them every six months if the first is successful.

“The meals paid for, and it’s held in the church,” she said.

“We have quite a sizeable foyer, that you can sit probably up to 60 people in there but if we get a dozen people, I’ll be really stoked.”

The inspiration for the event came from Ms Heidenreich’s journey of relocating to Broken Hill a few years ago.

“It probably came from my own experience of moving to town, and there’s some wonderful things happening if you’re in certain industries, but we came and weren’t working in those industries,” she said.

“When we moved here, we slowly got to know people through the church and the school, but even six months on there’d be things happening that I didn’t know existed.

“It can be a tricky place to make friends and make connections with people.

“I guess it’s kind of birthed out of my own experience and wanting to see an easier transition for others that are moving to town.”

The New to Town Dinner is on Saturday, February 8, at the Silver City CRC located at 466 Thomas Street, starting at 6pm.
