BROKEN Hill residents were rocked last night before midnight in what was a 2.6 magnitude earthquake.
According to GeoScience Australia, the earthquake hit at 11.45pm in a southern direction.
The quake was in line with the Mount Gipps motel and Stephen’s Creek but further inland.
Fifty-four people have reported feeling the earthquake which had a depth of 10 kilometres.
Local journalist Chris Graham said he was on the phone to a friend when he felt the quake.
“I’m a bit perplexed; I went on GeoScience Australia, and it seems to be the same event,” he said.
Chris lives in Crystal Street and has been trying to record the mine blasts in the evening.
“I’ve been trying to catch the vibrations, but I didn’t film yesterday, and it was quite a loud blast.
“Then I was talking with a friend and heard this big bang.
“I assumed it was the mine, that they were blasting at midnight.
“Then I saw the reports that it was an earthquake. It didn’t feel like an earthquake – it was just a single explosion.
“It was more pronounced than the mines.”
Chris said he felt the 1989 Newcastle earthquake while working in Sydney.
“I’ve felt an earthquake before – the Newcastle earthquake was quite low and a long rumbling shake.
“What happened last night was really pronounced.
“My dogs are used to the mine blast but even this shocked them; they jumped straight on the couch next to me.”
Chris said while what he felt was a single explosion, people had taken to Facebook to say they had felt 15 seconds of shaking and some rattled windows.
