Hot nights at North bowls

A VERY warm 34 degrees did not deter the impressive roll up of 30 attendees to North Broken Hill Bowling Club on the afternoon of Saturday, January 18 for social bowls.

The winning team for the afternoon was lead Tony Brown, second Bob Sultana and their skip Lloyd Rawlins.

The consolation wheel spin fell nicely for Steve Cicak, Amelia Butler and Nathan Gageler.

There was also a swag of resting touchers, led by Tony Brown with two, while Bruce Nettle, Eden Ey, Ken Hodge and Amelia Butler all notched one.

On Tuesday, January 14 evening social bowls was also played in hot weather with evening bowls on the agenda.

For the fourth time in succession, 30 social bowlers occupied five rinks on the carpet green.

There were two successful combinations, under the control of Dennis Cetinich and Peter Simons. The number 30 was spot on for Cetty’s trio, featuring lead June Walker, while Bob Sultana and Brian Pascoe shared the second’s duties.

The consolation spin produced some compensation for June Walker, Zac Weekes and their skip Peter Gageler.

Kris Hunter and Mark Perry were right on target with one resting toucher each, while Steve Cicak suffered one disorganised moment, when he delivered a wrong bias bowl.

In Minor Singles and Pairs championships nomination news, the club’s tournament committee is welcoming names for both categories in the resurrected 2024-25 championships.

Bowlers who have not won a major or minor singles or pairs title are most welcome to apply and nominations close on Saturday, February 1.

This Australian Day weekend fours tournament has been called off because of very hot weather forecast for this Sunday, January 26.

Normal Saturday social bowls will be held and forecast temperature is 34 degrees or less, then social bowls will begin at 1pm with names in by 12.30pm.

In accordance with an AGM motion from July 2024, if the forecast temperature is 35 degrees or more, then evening bowls will be played, starting at 6.30pm with names in by 6pm.

Finally, the 2024-25 Champ of Champs between the champions of both the North BHBC and Zinc BHBC will be held at the North BHBC on the following dates on Saturday, February 15 for pairs, and Sunday, February 16 for singles with a 9am start both days.

North BHBC club champions Jenny Garnaut and Judy Calleia, and Peter and Steve Balman in the pairs and Steph Balman and Barry Hooker in the singles will be in action.
