Mixed results for North in pennant

FOR the fourth time in as many weeks, the away team (Zinc in Round 11) won 10 competition points to the home club’s two.

Trevor Barry’s side led throughout to win 22-15; Nathan Gageler’s team also dominated in finishing 21-15.

Barry Hooker’s North four made an astounding recovery from being 0-16 in arrears before staging a miraculous fightback to win 22-21.

Zinc won the colour by 12 shots (64 to 52).Progressive tallies with three rounds to go: North 80, Zinc 52; total shots North 704, Zinc 598.

Social bowls:

Eighteen participants played two games of triples each.

There were two Zinc pennant teams skippered by Trevor Barry and Peter Gageler plus Peter Simons’ triple that figured in the spin for the major prize of the day.

A reasonably low number saw Barry’s side, which featured Brian Fenton, Craig Francis and Cheryl Barry, being the successful team.

The consolation wheel spin saw Allan Fraser, Kristian Sartori and skip Bob Sultana gain some compensation.

Glen Weekes was in very good form with two resting touchers, while Allan Fraser attained one. The resting touchers’ prize was won by Glyn Harrington.

Club Championships:

There is a strong possibility that the two remaining men’s singles semi-finals, featuring Barry Hooker v Stephen Balman and Wayne Williams v Ryan Atkinson, will be played on Sunday morning.

Social

A GOOD roll up of 20 participants played social bowls under our club’s shelter shade on Melbourne Cup Day.

Three were three unbeaten teams, under the control of skips Wayne Williams, Peter Gageler and Barry Hooker.

The number 39 was excellent news for Peter and his lead John Deron. Barry Hooker scored one wresting toucher while Peter Simons, with his last bowl of the day, and Brian Fenton delivered one wrong bias bowl each.

Barefoot bowls:

With 41 degrees forecast last Wednesday, barefoot bowls was postponed to be played this Wednesday.

Names are to be in by 6pm with play commencing at 6.30pm. There will be two games — either eight ends of triples or 10 ends of pairs. Match fees are $5. While everyone is welcome, this evening’s bowls is aimed at beginners and learners who would like a pleasant experience under lights on our upper grass green.

Tomorrow’s North pennant teams for round 12 will be played at the Zinc Bowling Club.

Teams are: Judy Calleia, Steph Balman, Lou Garnaut, Ryan Atkinson (skip); Ray Grenfell, Jeff Rushforth, Wayne Anderson, Peter Merritt (skip); Joe Deron, Jenny Garnaut, Graham Riley, Barry Hooker (skip).

Broken Hill Men’s Indoor Bias Bowls Association

THE last round was conducted on Tuesday night with all games completed.

Muso Flags flexed its strength with a big win over the Sturt Rebels 16-10 and Demo punched Try Hards with a power display 23-1.

This puts Muso Flags into the grand final to be played on Tuesday, November 19 at the Sturt Club.

Next week’s semi-final will be played on Tuesday between Sturt Rebels and Demo — all teams need full sides.

Nomination are now open for the men’s triples championships.
