Barrier Girls shine at championships

THE Barrier Girls Basketball Team spent last week competing at the NSW PSSA Primary Basketball Championships at Sutherland Basketball Stadium, competing against 13 other teams from across the state.

The tournament began with competition against Hunter Polding, with the last game of the day seeing the Barrier girls pull off a nail-biting victory win by just one point.

The win set the tone for the rest of the competition and highlighted the girls’ determination and skill on the court.

On the second day, the team continued to build on their momentum with another excellent performance, defeating North West decisively with a score of 47 to 24.

The victory not only showcased their basketball abilities but also solidified their place as a competitive force in the tournament.

Despite facing formidable opponents, including teams that ranked highly such as MacKillop, Sydney East, and Sydney West, the Barrier girls finished the tournament in 10th place out of 14 teams, securing two wins in total. Coach Megan Kunkler praised her team’s efforts, stating “a coach is supposed to teach the students, but the girls played at such a high level of basketball that they inspired me as a coach and taught me a few things along the way”.

The camaraderie and sportsmanship displayed by the girls throughout the tournament were commendable, according to Burke Warde principal Kate Hogg.

“The girls showcased their talent, teamwork and unwavering spirit,” she said.
