THE Barrier boys basketball team recently showcased their resilience and sportsmanship at the NSW PSSA State Championship held in Minto, Sydney South West.
Despite facing tough competition, the team made significant strides and gained invaluable experience during the three-day carnival.
Led by manager Dom Brown, the team comprised eight talented players: Kai Reavill, Nixon Walker, Nate Winders, and Ryder Wilkins from Morgan Street Public School; Jobe Novello, Madden Day, and Lincoln Stubing from Burke Ward Public School; and Kaden Balman from Broken Hill North Public School.
Prior to the tournament, the team engaged in five rigorous training sessions, including specialised coaching from Graeme Simmons.
For the first time in many years, Barrier also supplied two student referees to the carnival, with Akira and Cruz Stubing volunteering.
The competition was fierce, with the team opening their campaign against Sydney West, ultimately facing a 17-80 loss.
The following matches against Sydney North and North Coast continued to test their skills, but as the tournament progressed, the boys began to find their rhythm.
In a highlight match against Sydney South West, the team initially took control, showcasing their potential before a final score of 27-54.
While the scoreboard may not have reflected their effort, the Barrier boys maintained high spirits throughout the tournament, displaying commendable teamwork and determination.
Their final match against North West was a nail-biter, with the team initially leading before ultimately losing 27-44.
Despite not winning a game, the players demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and cooperation.
Among the key achievements, Lincoln Stubing was awarded the ‘hat award’ for embodying the values of the PSSA, highlighting the character and dedication of the team.
The carnival was ultimately won by Sydney North, who clinched the title with a 53-45 victory over CIS.
Although the Barrier boys faced challenges on the court, their commitment to improvement and teamwork laid the foundation for future success in the representative program of NSWPSSA.
