Last week the Broken Hill Social Work Network held its annual celebration of World Social Work Day on Tuesday, March 18, with a celebration at the Broken Hill Art Exchange.
The event was attended by community members, students, health services and social workers and focused on breaking down the 2025 theme for the day, Strengthening Intergenerational Solidarity for Enduring Wellbeing, and local event theme, Sharing Wisdom as We Are Weaving.
As part of this local theme, recycled materials were used at the event for a group weaving activity, with words of wisdom written and shared throughout from experienced social workers to students on placement.
Social work academic at the Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health (BHUDRH), Hannah Dean, said she’s grateful for the social work network that Broken Hill has.
“I share this profession with so many inspiring and passionate people and the turn out today solidified that,” she said.
“We had students attend the event and I’m so proud of the professionalism and interest they all showed.
“It was a great opportunity for them to network outside of a university setting and ask people in a rural social work setting, what advice would you give me?”
Ms Dean said that the piece of art woven by the group will be on display at the Broken Hill University Department of Rural Health.
“The department has been recognised by the network as the centre for social work, somewhere that social workers feel connected as a profession,” she said.
“We joked at the event that it can become the Sisterhood of the Travelling Weave and that it can be displayed elsewhere within the community overtime.”
