Art for new mental health unit

THE new acute mental health inpatient unit currently under construction as part of the Far West Local Health District Hospital redevelopment will be decorated with paintings by local artists to bring colour and life to the facility.

Creatives including Clinton Kemp, Joshua De Gruchy and Amanda Johnson have made art to be turned into vinyls that will be installed on the walls of the facility.

Cathy Farry, President of West Darling Arts who are facilitating the arts project said that the artwork will be adapted to best fit the room it’s in.

“So Amanda’s work in paediatrics will be on display in full, but for Clinton and Joshua’s work we’re looking at taking parts of it and using it sort of like a wallpaper, repetitious patterns.” Ms Farry said.

West Darling Arts are also seeking already completed artworks such as paintings and Lino-prints from local artists to add to the unit which will further add to the facilities distinct, local identity.

“We’re hoping for artworks depicting nature, plants etcetera, landscapes,” she said.

“Being mental health it’s tricky, we can’t have people or animals and we want to avoid any strong angry colour palettes.”

Ms Farry said anyone with work that might be suitable is encouraged to reach out to the arts organisation for consideration.

Applications should be submitted to rado@westdarlingarts.com.au and kathryn.graham@brokenhill.gov.au by Thursday, 3 April at 5pm.

Artworks must be original and unframed.

Artists are asked to include an image of the artwork, their name, a short biography, artwork title and year, text about the artwork if available, artwork material, dimensions and purchase price.
