Prisoner in hot water

A MAN had his prison sentence extended on Tuesday in Broken Hill Local Court, after he allegedly threw boiling water on another prisoner, which also accidentally made contact with a prison officer.

The man, who appeared via video link, had been serving an existing sentence and was due to be released on April 22, but Justice McIntosh ruled to extend his imprisonment for three months until July 22.

The man pled guilty to assault, though the court heard that he had not intended for the boiling water to make contact with the prison guard but rather the other prisoner.

The court heard that the man had “an incredibly lengthy criminal history,” and that the crime was aggravated by the fact that the victim was a correctional officer.

Justice McIntosh said it was clear that the water had come into contact with the correctional officer, though thankfully there was minimum harm.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Tim Waite told the court that no serious injuries had been sustained.
