Model flying club competes

THE Broken Hill Model Flying Club saw many keen pilots turn out for their competition day on Saturday.

Thanks to the ideal flying conditions, pilots competed in the first round of the Motor Aerosport South Australia’s Country Competition, which consisted of three challenges.

The challenges included a fast and slow competition, which saw aircrafts fly both fast and slow across a 30-metre stretch, sudden death, where pilots have to hover and land quickly on demand, and take off, loops and land.

Club member Ashley Smith said about 15 members and spectators attended.

“Members took advantage of the perfect flying conditions of low winds and moderate temperatures,” he said.

Mr Smith had a couple of successful flights with his resurrected Boomerang 40, attempting rolls and loops.

Attendees were treated to a barbecue lunch, and those who stayed until the end of the day cooked damper on the fire before practising some night flying.

Mr Smith said more competitions are in the works for the club later this year.
