Bowls notes

North Broken Hill Bowling Club

Saturday, May 10

THE delightful 23 degrees weather saw 20 social bowlers play two matches on our club’s carpet green.

There were no two game winners, so all six teams went into the wheel spin for the afternoon’s major prize.

The number 49 was a tremendous result for lead June Walker, second Peter Simons and the skip Stephen Balman.

Tuesday, May 13

CONTINUED brilliant weather (24 degrees) saw 24 social bowlers which meant bowlers would also compete for a consolation prize, as well as the main award.

There were two unbeaten sides following two matches on our club’s upper grass green, under the control of Peter Simons and Dustin Williams.

An odd number was perfect for lead Ken Murray, second Noel Lae and their skip Dustin Williams.

Some partial justice took place when Peter’s triple, consisting of lead Phil Stephens and second Kay Burns, won the consolation draw.

Resting touchers were attained by Judy Calleia and Phil Stephens.

Steph Balman in the Bowls SA Champion of Champions

TWO weekends ago, our 2024-25 North BHBC Women’s Singles champion Steph Balman competed in the Bowls SA Champion of Champions in Adelaide.

This tournament is open to every Bowls SA affiliated club, in effect a statewide championship.

It’s based on a knockout format.

Steph started off well, leading 11-6.

Despite playing a lot of good bowls, she eventually lost, which eliminated her from the tournament.

Her impressive display should lead to further state events’ participation in the near future.

THE winter competition started last Tuesday night with the grand finalist meeting in game one.

Flags, being the champions in the summer comp, put their foot down and scored regular with ease, but to Demo’s credit they kept them to small scores and even lead after the sixth end.

Flags scored eight shots in the next three end to blow the score to 10 to 4 and Demo did fight back in the last three ends but could not bridge the gap — 14 to 11 Flags’ way.

Ray Grenfell. Peter Merritt, Tyrone English, and skip by Young Aaron Hawke.

For the Demo, Adrian Dalby Bob Smith Bill Gebhardt and Robbie Butler.

The second game of the night was between Try-Hards and Sturt Rebels.

Both the teams played with three players, as Try-Hards have not been able to get a player so a triples game.

Sturt jumped out in front 16 to 2 after 10 ends, but Try-Hards tried hard all night to keep the scoring respectable.

The end score was 18 to 10 Sturt’s way.

If there is any gentleman wishing to join a team, please come down on Tuesday night, the mats are always out about 7.45pm at the Sturt Club.

Come and have a go, you may enjoy the game.

Round 2 will be played on Tuesday, May 20, Sturt versus Demo and Flags versus Try-Hards.
