Raising funds for breast cancer fight

THE Broken Hill Breast Cancer Support Group fundraising committee have kicked off their fundraising efforts.

The group have their shop front open for the Mundi Mundi Bash guests and locals during the week.

Normally they open on Saturdays in the lead up to Pink October, but they opened for the week.

The volunteers of the group are also busy organising their first event the Annual Pink Luncheon.

The event will kick off Pink October and will be held on Sunday, September 28 at the Musicians Club.

Committee vice-president Jan Baum said tickets are on sale at the Pink Shop at Westside Plaza and are $75.

“We’re hoping to get about 120 guests. There will be a two-course meal with celebration cake,” she said.

“There will be entertainment by Smoke and Mirrors as well as raffles.”

Committee member Sharon Degoumois said “the more, the merrier” when it came to the luncheon.

Last year, the luncheon was held at the BHP and was very well-attended.

The Pink October month finishes up with an auction night at the Silver City Workingmen’s Club.

“That will be on October 24,” Mrs Baum said.

The event did have to be postponed last year, due to the rolling blackouts through the city – but the committee were still able to pull the event off.

“They’re very generous at the Workies, they always support us,” Mrs Degoumois said.

“We always receive lots of beautiful donations,” Mrs Baum said.

Both women said locals are always very supportive of Pink October.

“We visit the nursing homes during Pink October,” Mrs Baum said.

“The Pink Shop is open from 10am to 2pm every Saturday, then come October we’re open during the weekdays.

“It keeps us busy.”

With all that the group has going on towards the latter part of the year, Mrs Degoumois said Pink October is a “a big month”.

Mrs Baum said they’ve had a few more volunteers join up this year.

“We’re always looking for people to join,” she said.

The volunteers have been busy making their famous rosettes that are placed around town thanks to the Lions Club.

All the money raised stays in Broken Hill.

It goes towards travel assistance, the wig bank, palliative care and oncology.

The group has helped fundraise for physiotherapists to receive education, purchase lymphedema machines and a cool cap machine.
