Late charge seals it for Zinc

Zinc have recovered from a slow start to charge home and claim a 12-shot victory over North in an entertaining North Broken Hill pennant Round 9 encounter, which could have gone either way.North were going well at the halfway mark with two comfortable leads, plus one close fixture.

However, Zinc stormed back into the contest, with Brad Lane’s four winning 21-9 and Peter Gageler’s team scoring four on the final end to tie 19-all.

Lou Garnaut salvaged the situation to some degree with his final bowl, which fortunately ended up nearest to the kitty, forcing the second draw for the afternoon 20-all.

Zinc finished 61-49 ahead, while one win and two draws gave them 10 competition points to North’s two.

Progressive tallies: competition points – North 68, Zinc 40; total shots – North 581, Zinc 478.

There was a very good attendance of 18 participants for social bowls.

The only side which scored two victories was Steve Balman’s combination, featuring split leads June Walker/ and Charlie Sultana, and second Dot McInnes.

The consolation prize went to Barry Hooker’s North BHBC pennant team (Zac Weekes, Glen Weekes and Graham Riley) and there were plenty of resting touchers, with Allan Fraser, Bill Symons, Zac Weekes, Ray Sayers and Denis Watts attaining one each.

Two round 2 men’s singles matches remain in the club championships, with the deadline being on Sunday.

Stephen Balman is drawn to play Jeff Rushforth, while Ray Grenfell is scheduled to face Ryan Atkinson.

Steph Balman defeated Jenny Garnaut in the women’s singles semi-final, so for the third year in a row Balman will play defending champion Judy Calleia, with the ledger at one championship each.
