MENINDEE artists and community members have begun painting the pipeline at the site of the installation of fish passageway infrastructure between Lake Wetherell and the Lower Darling-Baaka River.
The community art project, which is a collaboration between local artists and the CAD Factory, facilitated a workshop with the Menindee community in January to plan the design.
Artistic director and public officer at the CAD Factory, Vic McEwan, said Barkandji artefacts were used as a reference point.
“We’ve spoken with the community and Elders group and decisions were made that these pipes would be painted in patterns inspired by when Dave Doyle went to the UK and went to the British museum and discovered artefacts that had Barkandji patterns they didn’t know about,” he said.
“So the idea is that we’re returning those patterns to country by painting them onto fish tubes.”
Parts of the pipeline, which is more than 12 meters long, will be left unpainted so that community can paint on the pipes during open days throughout April.
