Past players to celebrate milestone

THE Cock Robins will be coming home to nest at their Old Timers at the end of the month, which coincides with their 125-year celebrations.

The West Broken Hill Football Club Past Players have announced that the 125-year celebration of the club will be held on Sunday, June 29 at the clubrooms.

It will be an opportunity for some of the people who have been an important part of the club’s rich history and journey to come together and share memories of their time and experience there.

John ‘Yabby’ Lynch will again be Master of Ceremonies, with the guest speaker being former AFL great Neil Balme.

Balme has been involved with many AFL clubs since his start in the 1960s.

From 1969 to 1979, he played at Richmond Football Club in the Victorian Football League where he played 159 games and kicked 229 goals, and was a premiership player 1973 and 1974, leading goalkicker in 1972 and 1973, and retired as a life member towards the decade’s end.

He went on to coach Norwood Football Club in the SANFL.

He has also held positions at Melbourne, Collingwood and Geelong Football Clubs.

West will also be hosting former Carlton and Brisbane Lions footballer Mitch Robinson, who will play in the marquee game on the Saturday.

The club had previously booked footballer Charlie Dixon but due to a double booking it fell through.

West Broken Hill Football Club Past Players vice chair Andrew Wilson said they were lucky to be able to secure a marquee player and a guest speaker for their event.

Mr Wilson said they’re hoping to secure about 250 tickets for their event this year.

“Last year, we had about 230 people attend, it was a really good turn out,” he said.

Tickets are $70 per person and includes two course meal and refreshments from 11am to 4pm.

There will be a lot of history discussed with the marking of 125 years for the club.

Mr Wilson said Broken Hill was established in 1883 and the club started 17 years after that.

He said during his research, he was able to find 130 more life members who hadn’t been named on their honour board.

“It was really good to be able to update that, we just have a really rich history,” he said.

Tickets are available by calling Mr Wilson on 0419 839 739, or Peter Pascoe on 0407 377 451.

Bookings are essential.
