LAST week the Broken Hill Musicians Club hosted its first ever Biggest Morning Tea, raising money for the Cancer Council and blowing the fundraising target out of the water.
The tea, held last Friday, May 30, at the club included an array of homemade treats, tea, coffee and raffle prizes.
The club’s general manager Michael Boland said their board of directors raised the idea of holding the event a few months prior, which was met with unanimous support.
“There’s been a few raffles around the club for the last couple of months, particularly on our meat raffle nights and everyone – even in a cost of living crisis – has dug deep for a good cause and have bought lots of raffle tickets,” he said.
Musicians Club functions manager Cathy Martin, who helped to organise the event and was working on-the-ground on Friday, said that pre-event raffles alone had raised over $4000.
“We’ve had a lot of local businesses get behind us and donate a lot of things like food and cakes; it’s been awesome,” she said.
When asked if this year was the biggest yet, Ms Martin said that no, because next year will be the best.
“It’s going to get bigger next year; we want to kick it up a little bit next year and do a high tea,” she said.
“We want to aim for a big high tea and have really nice food, and let people pay-per-head and build it up even bigger to raise as much as possible.”
For Ms Martin, like many, the reason behind the fundraising has a deeper personal meaning.
“My brother passed away from cancer. He was 44 and left his kids behind. I have two of them, left them with me, so it really hit my heart when they asked me to help,” she said.
