THE Broken Hill Speedway Club hosted their first event of the year on Saturday, and the second meet since the raceway reopened late last year.
Club secretary and race official Ali Howse said the event went off without a hitch and attendance numbers were high.
“I think we had about 680 people through the front gate,” she said.
“We put it out there for this event for interstate riders to come which they did and it was a relatively safe night, a few accidents but nothing catastrophic.”
The racing saw multiple disciplines compete on the track, including a speedway sidecar category and track, or motor cross on a flat track surface.
“Those two events particularly are quite beloved by spectators,” Howse said.
“They’re quite thrilling, they’re very short and sharp races.”
Howse said the event saw many families bring picnic rugs and chairs and set up in the stands for the evening.
“It’s a community and family friendly event,” she said.
“We also have full bar and canteen facilities.”
After the success of the first event, Howse said the club are excitedly planning for their next race meet, the State Championship on March 1.
“We’re hosting a state championship, which tickets are now on sale for via the Speedway Club Facebook page,” she said.
“That will see competitors from all over the state, and we’re expecting riders from across Australia, which we’re confident we will get.”
Howse said the last state championship the club hosted in 2017 before the Speedway’s hiatus saw 3500 through the gates.
“We’re not necessarily anticipating that crowd capacity again, but we’re not naïve and thinking that won’t be the case either,” she said.
“So we’re fully prepared for numbers, catering wise.”
Even newcomers who might not generally care for motor sports are sure to have a good time at the track, Howse said.
“It’s thrilling, any newcomer I know walks away going wow, it was exhilarating,” she said. “They love it!”
