Girls turn on the heat

North 5/135 ( C Robinson 41, M Boylan 24*, M Attard 2/28)

Defeat

West (8/84 K Bugmy 24, S Milne 4/14 S Balman 3/10)

In an eagerly awaited return to action, the North women’s cricket team faced off against West at Jubilee Oval in Round 10, under a punishing sun that reached a staggering 41 degrees.

North won the toss and opted to bat first, a decision that allowed the players to cool off in the shade while West toiled in the field.

The innings began with the Morris sisters, Morgan and Hannah, at the crease. In a display of sisterly strategy, Morgan sent Hannah to face the first delivery.

The start was cautious, with a few extras and smart running establishing a solid foundation.

Morgan quickly found her rhythm, showcasing her trademark softball swing to drive a no-ball straight down the ground, signaling the start of a promising innings.

Unfortunately, Hannah’s innings came to an abrupt end when she was caught by Emma Crowley off Milla Attard’s bowling.

With the first wicket down, Cassie Robinson joined Morgan and wasted no time, accelerating the scoring.

The pair unleashed an impressive flurry of boundaries, scoring seven in just five overs, which propelled North to a commendable 1/56 by the first drinks break.

As the innings progressed, Robinson and Morgan continued to dominate, driving the score forward with confident strokes.

Yet, the oppressive heat forced Morgan to retire not out on a commendable 24, prioritising her health in the sweltering conditions.

In her absence, Steph Balman entered the fray and struck a few early blows before being dismissed lbw by Kendra Bugmy. Stevie Hack followed but could only manage a solitary run before departing, leaving North at 3/94 after 13 overs.

A moment of excitement came when Ellie Simmons, after years of reluctance, strolled to the crease equipped with a full kit.

She looked right at home, displaying excellent skills and quick running between the wickets as Robinson continued to attack from the other end.

Robinson fell in the 17th over, scoring a well-made 41 runs off 44 balls.

Jess Musgrove, initially looking nervous, came in next but was quickly shown the ropes by Simmons’ running. Musgrove was soon bowled, leaving North in a tricky position.

Captain Sophie Milne stepped up, hitting some heavy blows late in the innings while rotating the strike effectively with Simmons. North finished their innings on a respectable 5/135.

West were brave in the field, and despite the sweltering conditions they persevered and completed their 20 overs.

With a target of 136 runs to chase down, the North bowlers took to the field under lights for the first time this season on a turf wicket and innings started a bit scratchy for North, but the ever-reliable Milne struck in the fourth over, reducing West to 1/20.

West began to find their footing, with Bugmy leading some aggressive strokes, pushing the score to 1/60 after 10 overs — a situation that began to make the North coaches anxious.

However, Milne brought herself on for a game-changing over, taking two wickets for zero runs and initiating a dramatic collapse for the opposition.

Balman made an outstanding catch at short cover, further adding to West’s troubles. In a stunning five-over spell, North managed to take 4/14, turning the game in their favor.

As the lights began to take effect, North’s bowlers capitalised on the fatigue of the West side, claiming another three wickets for just 10 runs in the final five overs.

The brilliance displayed by the North girls, especially under such challenging conditions, was a testament to their resilience and determination.

With this hard-fought victory, North turns its attention to a crucial match against Central this Sunday, setting the stage for an exciting couple of weeks ahead, including a showdown against South.
