Clubhouse set to close

THE Clubhouse program, enjoyed by many Broken Hill youngsters, has failed to secure further funding, spelling the end of the initiative.

Delivered by Social Futures, it will shut at the end of June.

Parents and families were made aware of the change recently.

“It is with heartfelt sadness that we share some important news with you,” the correspondence stated.

“Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, we have not been successful in securing ongoing funding for The Clubhouse program.

“As a result, the program will be coming to a close before June 30, 2025. While we don’t yet have a confirmed closure date, we wanted to ensure you were informed as early as possible.”

The correspondence stated that the team will work hard to explore and share information about alternative after-school opportunities and programs that may be of interest.

Parent Mal Hutchinson said the news was disappointing.

“It would be a shame if it closes down, it’s a good thing for Broken Hill,” he said. “It’s good for the kids to have a space to utilise and learn.

“The program is there to help the kids learn and the co-ordinators facilitate that learning.

“There’s nothing really in Broken Hill for kids (to do after school) that’s helping them along with doing different things (like the Clubhouse).”

Mr Hutchinson’s 12-year-old son Baxter said he has been going to the Clubhouse in Argent Street this year and a bit last year. He attends three afternoons a week and enjoys making things and gaming.

“I do things after school, but this is a really good program, ” he said. “I’m sad that it’s closing. There’s not much to see and do (after school) all the time. I enjoy gaming with the other kids and the other week we made key chains.”

A spokeswoman for Social Futures said they had worked hard to secure more funding.

“Despite collective efforts and advocacy, we have not been successful in securing ongoing financial support to continue this transformative initiative,” she said.

“Although this news is disappointing, it also provides a moment to pause and reflect on the incredible achievements of the past two years.

“With support from stakeholders and the Broken Hill community, we have cultivated a space where young people have felt empowered, connected, and inspired.

“Through that support and collaboration, The Clubhouse has become a hub for creativity, learning, growth, and community connection.”

The nearby Social Futures office will remain open and continue to provide services and support as normal. It said it remains committed to exploring new opportunities, advocating for ongoing support, and seeking innovative ways to continue delivering meaningful outcomes for the community.

“We want to thank everyone for being a part of the Clubhouse Broken Hill journey with us, and we do welcome any feedback and letters of support via info@socialfutures.org.au, so that we can do our best to find a way forward for this program,” the spokeswoman said.

“For any enquiries, we can be reached at info@socialfutures.org.au or 1800 719 625.”
