Car thief pleads guilty

AN unlicensed Broken Hill man who stole a new car from a Mildura dealership in February, before returning it and stealing a 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero instead, has plead guilty to eight charges in court on Tuesday.

Ashley Young, 27, who appeared via video link, pled guilty to all eight charges, which included driving a vehicle without a license, stealing a motor vehicle, dishonestly obtaining property and police pursuit and reckless driving.

Young entered Northstar Motors in Mildura at 3am on February 23 through a large roller door, driving away down a laneway in a new white Hyundai i30.

Only nine minutes later the man returned to the dealership, swapping the car for a 2020 Mitsubishi Pajero.

Less than an hour later, Young returned with two unknown co-accused, who allegedly stole a Hyundai Santa Fe.

Young then failed to pay for diesel twice while driving the Pajero at a service station in Mildura, and at a Broken Hill petrol station.

He was located asleep inside a Mildura unit the following day, in possession of keys to the Pajero.

The Santa Fe was found in Buronga.

Young is due to be sentenced at Local Court on June 19.
