Lynch football genes run deep

TEENAGER Ruby Lynch is starting to etch her own path in football, following in the footstep of her highly respected grandparents, John and Anita.

The Lynch clan have a rich history in the Silver City!

John Lynch, who ran the Royal Flying Doctors, was an accomplished footballer with West and also played for representative footy the Barrier association, before coming down to Adelaide and coaching at Glenelg in their underage program.

His wife Anita has featured in the Broken Hill Sporting Icons series.

Ruby Lynch debuted with the Woodville West Torrens Eagles at SANFLW League level in round one this season, and has steading grown as footballer and all-round sportswomen.

In the Round 12 of the women’s competition, in her return game Ruby Lynch won SANFLW Powerade Breakthrough Player award.

A member of the SA Under 18 squad, the tall utility displayed her ability in an important win over the West Adelaide girls.

“She played the first five rounds in the league team,” Woodville West Torrens coach Narelle Smith said. “Then she plateaued a little.

“Rubys’ has also played some representative basketball with the Torrensville Eagles at this time.

“Completed her basketball commitments and also playing some local footy at Henley, while still training with us, she came back into our side for the round 12 match.

“It was always my intention to bring her back in the program after her commitments.

“She came back into our team for the game against West and excelled.

“One of her attributes she is such an agile kid at 180cm tall and is always threatening in the aerial contest.

“Along with that, she has wonderful penetrating left foot kick as well.

“Ruby only turns 17 late in the year, being a bottom ager in the SA state Under 18 program.

“Her draft year will be 2026.”

Personally, Lynch tallying 16 disposals, four marks and nine tackles in the SANFLW win against the Bloods at Maughan Thiem Kia Oval (Woodville Oval), on Saturday, June 21, where she received her breakthrough Player accolade.

That performance propelled Lynch into the South Australian Under 18s side for last Sunday’s June 29 match against Western Australia at the Revo Fitness Stadium, Claremont.

More accurate in front of goal SA won the 8.2 (50) to 4.6 (30).

Lynch handled the step up to National level well, finishing with 10 disposals, winning nine hit outs and laying four tackles and importantly kicking a goal in the 20-point victory.

All the Under 18s return to SANFLW football for the final round of the regular season and finals, before two more fixtures in their program on August 3 and 10.
