Club championships 2024-25 season:

The two remaining men’s singles quarter-finals were played on Sunday.

Ryan Atkinson played Ray Grenfell and Atkinson twice established healthy a lead, initially 7-1 and then 18-10 but Grenfell scored five shots in two ends to narrow the margin to 18-15, but Atkinson kept producing crucial bowls to win 21-15.

In the later fixture, Stephen Balman played Jeff Rushforth. Rushworth scored four to lead 10-6. However, Balman consistently got his line and length spot on to establish a significant 19-14 lead. Rushforth kept himself alive when he moved the kitty back to his bowls to score four and then added a single to level the match at 19-all.

Balman was not to be denied, and again put two bowls adjacent to the kitty, which Rushforth could not remove. Balman won 21-19.

The two semi-finals will be Barry Hooker verses Stephen Balman and Wayne Williams verses Ryan Atkinson. These two games will have to be played by Sunday, November 24.

Tuesday’s midweek competition was played in ideal under the shelter shade, with 26 bowlers participating.

Two sides emerged undefeated, under the charge of skips Wayne Williams and Stephen Balman. The latter’s good run with the wheel saw his team, comprising of lead Kris Hunter and split/seconds, Brian Pascoe and Charlie Sultana, win the afternoon’s major prize.

The consolation spin saw some compensation for Wayne Williams’ combination, which included lead Tony Brown and second Kay Burns. There were six resting-touchers with Stephen Balman, Kris Hunter, Brian Pascoe, Barry Hooker, Joe Deron and Ken Murray all scoring one.

Williams certainly did have a fluctuating day with one wrong bias bowl, while Brian Fenton’s concentration evaporated on his final bowl, making it two wrong bias bowls altogether.

The reintroduction of barefoot bowls will begin on Wednesday evening.

Names by 6pm, with play commencing at 6.30pm. There will be two games either eight ends of triples or 10 ends of pairs. Match fees are $5. While everyone is welcome, barefoot bowls is aimed at beginners and learners.

Round 11 Pennant teams for Saturday played at home: Judy Calleia, Steph Balman, Lou Garnaut, Ryan Atkinson (skip); Ray Grenfell, Brian Jones, Jeff Rushforth, Wayne Anderson (skip); Joe Deron, Glen Weekes, Graham Riley, Barry Hooker (skip).
