Palace dragged up Heritage Register

THE Palace Hotel has been further recognised in the NSW State Heritage Register, with the listing updated to note the venue’s importance in the queer community.

An iconic hotel in the town, The Palace is famous for its appearance in classic Australian film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, released in 1994.

Key scenes were filmed in the hotel, showcasing the venue’s well-known murals.

Aiming to provide further recognition of the establishment’s contribution to NSW’s LGBTQIA+ community, and the landmark it has become, additional values were added to the hotel’s existing listing.

The hotel is also synonymous with the Australian drag industry with a plethora of drag queens having performed there over the decades.

Member for Barwon Roy Butler said The Palace has a history of celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community and represents an iconic part of cinema history.

“The recognition is well deserved and helps to preserve the history and role of the Palace in the community,” he said.

Minister for Heritage Penny Sharpe said The Palace has long been a cherished part of the city’s story.

“We are ensuring its significant role in the history of Australia’s LGBTQIA+ community is properly acknowledged and celebrated,” she said.

“The Palace Hotel’s amendment on the NSW State Heritage Register recognises the vibrant LGBTQIA+ history that has flourished within its walls.

“The Palace Hotel has not only served as a symbolic gathering place for the LGBTQIA+ community but has also become an essential part of Broken Hill’s story.”
