THE newest addition to Broken Hill’s extensive list of cultural clubs and societies is the Red Dirt Film Club, which is hosting its inaugural film screening on January 25 with the musical The Pajama Game.
Community advocate Gigi Barbe and former owner of Mt Vic Flicks in the Blue Mountains, Ron Bayley, had spent many occasions discussing the idea of a film club in town.
Committee member Barbara-Rose Townsend said the club received more than 90 responses to a post on Facebook asking for interest in a local film club.
Screenings will be hosted at Theatre 44, which offers a readymade venue with a large screen.
Barbe and Bayley, alongside nine committee members, plan to host regular screenings across a range of genres such as documentary, fantasy, animation, biopics, foreign films, historical films and more.
The club say they hope to celebrate classic cinema and lesser-known independent films.
Film fans can join the Red Dirt Film Club on the night of the screening, with memberships costing $45 annually.
Over eighteen year olds can join as members, though children are still able to attend screenings where appropriate.
Membership includes ten film screenings for the year, three guests able to attend for free, and the opportunity to meet and discuss films with other cinephiles.
Screenings for non-members will be asked to donate $10 for a maximum of three films.
The Red Dirt Film Club are grateful for support from the Broken Hill Art Exchange, Broken Hill Repertory Society (Theatre 44) and West Darling Arts.
